The Rotary Club’s motto is “Service Above Self,” and
Gilroy Rotarians are actively involved in humanitarian,
educational, and cultural programs that touch people's
lives both in the local community and throughout the world.
“Area 6” refers to a group of six South Bay Rotary Clubs (Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill, Almaden, Hollister, and San Juan Bautista) that get together each year and pool their resources to support a large-scale community project. Past projects have included
improvements at Rebekah Children Home in Gilroy, the Chamberlain’s Children Center in Hollister, and Henry Coe Park.
The 2013 Area 6 Project supported the Gilroy Compassion Center, which provides basic services that homeless people need to survive, such as restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and food. The Center also has computers and other resources to help find employment and transitional housing.
The Gilroy Compassion Center, housed in an old World War II-era storage building, was in desperate need of a makeover. In 2013, volunteers from Area Six Rotary Clubs came together to address the Center’s “wish list.” The Rotary volunteers repainted the administrative areas, installed new carpet, built shelving, and purchased and installed new washers and dryers.
Stay tuned for more information about the 2014 Area 6 Project, which will involve improvements to a picnic area in San Juan Bautista.
